Social Media + Community

Standard

Today I was talking with some friends about the four different levels of community based on a book called The Search to Belong.

  • Public (strangers at a common sporting event, airport, etc.) — common experiences
  • Social (acquaintances) — common interests
  • Personal (close family/friends) — sharing personal experiences, feelings, thoughts
  • Private (roommates/spouse) — sharing private experiences, feelings, and thoughts.

Because I just moved to DC in September, I can think of people not physically close by who would fill all of these roles. But I also try to stay connected to people I know through social media. It is slow in creating community in DC, but I am well on my way.

Thoughts? What part does social media play in community/connecting?
